Student Visits

Student Program: approximately one hour, 3rd through 12th grade
A historic interpreter provides specific information about the history and technology of the Central of Georgia Repair Shops, as well as the impact of the railroad on the state of Georgia. This hands-on program involves multiple stations that employ experiential learning. Station topics may include:
  • Steam engines
  • Locomotives
  • Blacksmithing
  • Railroad car tour
  • Industrial tools and practices
  • Railway communication methods
  • Architecture
  • Railroad careers
Interpretive information is aligned with Georgia Performance Standards. Student Programs correspond especially well with 4th and 8th grade science and social studies lessons, but are also easily adapted to other grade levels.

Student Lunch Program: approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes (11:00am-2:00pm)
Student Program accompanied by a boxed lunch. Enjoy your meal in the Blacksmith Shop, where the disappearing art of metalworking is still practiced today.

Student Dinner Program: approximately two hours (reservations beginning after 5:30pm)
Student Program with a choice of three meals. Enjoy dinner in the Blacksmith Shop while listening to railroad folk music provided by our interpretive musicians.

Young Student Program: approximately one hour, Preschool thru 2nd grade
Led by our Education Specialist, the Young Student Program is tailored for our smallest guests. The program includes a meet & greet, sing-a-long and storytime. A tour of our site and learning activities in the Kids Zone are also a special part of this program.
Railroad-themed goodie bags are also available for an additional fee per child. These "hobo bags" include a juice box, gummi candy and a sticker, all wrapped up in a festive red bandanna.

Grandfather Gordon's Railroad: approximately one hour, Girl Scouts
Grandfather Gordon's Railroad details the life of Juliette Gordon Low's grandfather, William Washington Gordon, and his involvement in establishing the Central of Georgia Railroad. This program is offered to our visiting Girl Scouts and includes a one-of-a-kind Roundhouse Railroad Museum patch upon completion! Program topics may include:
  • Railroad car tour
  • Blacksmithing and Juliette's interest in the art of metalworking
  • Careers for women on the railroad
  • Locomotives
